A colt by Capitalist and a trio of Spirit Of Boom youngsters stood out at the March Yearling Sale
Golden Slipper winner Capitalist and local star Spirit Of Boom were the headline performers of the opening day of the deferred Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale, which started on Monday.
Capitalist had the highest-priced lot of the day, a colt out of Sold For Song who sold for $150,000.
A member of the KBL Thoroughbreds draft, the colt was bought by Suman Hedge in partnership with Trilogy Racing.
The colt is the second foal of his dam Sold for Song, a daughter of Collate who was a multiple stakes winner and group performer.
She is best remembered for winning a Daybreak Lover Stakes and Gold Edition Plate, both at Listed level, while her placings included seconds in a Group 2 Gilgai Stakes in Melbourne and Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas.
"We are really happy with how he went," Brad Lowe of KBL Thoroughbreds said.
"It was probably a bit above expectations - we thought around $120,000.
"A very good judge bought him in Suman Hedge so he's going to a good home," Lowe added.
Spirit Of Boom had the three next highest-priced lots of the day, including a pair of fillies who sold for $140,000.
Tony Gollan and John Foote teamed up to buy the filly out of Real Saga mare Sweet Dolly, while the filly out of Williams Bay, a daughter of Capitalist, is bound for South Africa after being bought by Craig Ramsay.
Spirit Of Boom also had a colt, out of Dylan Thomas mare Dylan's Deeva, sell for $120,000 to Suman Hedge and WA trainers Grant and Alana Williams, while that partnership also paid $110,000 for a filly by Brave Smash out of Splendora.
"Today was a very selective day in the market place," Magic Millions managing director Barry Bowditch said.
"The right product sold very well with more $100,000 plus horses today than Day 1 last year and an increase in average.
"The numbers from the middle to top end were quite strong today and it was great to see buyers from China, South Africa, Western Australia and Victoria playing at the top end.
"The significant issue in the market today was the pass-in rate. Obviously we want to lift that tomorrow well into the 70s and I think that is possible."
