Day 2 provided the top two lots of this year’s March Yearling Sale on the Gold Coast.
Tuesday's second and final day of the Magic Millions March Yearling Sale produced the two highest-priced lots of the Gold Coast offering with a colt by Pinatubo topping the sale.
The KBL Thoroughbreds youngster, who is out of the I Am Invincible mare Of The Day, was bought by First Light Racing in partnership with Tony Gollan and John Foote for $290,000.
Gollan trained Of The Day's sister Most Important to win a Group 3 George Moore Stakes and Andrew Dunemann, general manager at Gollan Racing, were keen to get the relation.
"We thought he was the colt of the sale, Tony has had a fair bit to do with the mare," Dunemann said.
"It's a really good family, a good Queensland family. Linda Huddy has bred him and she's one of our great clients and we have great respect for what she does in terms of breeding them."
The second top seller of the day and sale was the Spirit of Boom colt from Lonhro's Spirit, who sold to Clint Taylor and Bacon Racing for $210,000.
The Kenmore Lodge offering is a half-brother to Fred Best Classic placegetter End Assembly.
"We love the stallion, we've had terrific success with him," Taylor said.
"He was one we identified. He's probably more of a three-year-old and we will give him a bit of time.
"We really like him and we thought he was good buying."
The Pinatubo and Spirit Of Boom colts were the only two youngsters of the sale to go for more than $150,000 with the Capitalist colt who topped Day 1 at $150,000 holding a spot in the top three lots of the sale.
Across the sale, more than $8.3 million was traded on 240 lots sold at an average price of $34,635 and clearance rate of over 73 percent.
Last year's sale, which had 12 additional lots, grossed $8,796,500 at an average of $33,320 with a 75 percent clearance rate.
"Overall it was a solid enough day," Magic Millions managing director Barry Bowditch said of Day 2.
"The clearance rate is a bit lower than we would have liked but it was a strong average and there were plenty of six figure horses.
"For the right product there were plenty of bidders here on the ground.
"It was expected going in that it would be a bit tough at the bottom end. On a whole we are very happy with the cross section of buyers.
"The local market has been solid enough and I'm really happy with buyers from interstate and internationally that complemented what the locals were participating on."
Spirit Of Boom was leading sire by both gross ($1.42m) and average ($78,889), Eureka Stud was leading vendor by gross ($1,079,500), while Glenlogan Park was led the averages for vendors who sold at least three lots with five lots selling for $72,800 apiece.
