The World Pool meeting at Greyville Racecourse in Durban, South Africa this Saturday (7 June) starts with the G1 Gold Challenge (1600m) and also includes two other graded features.
Last year's Gold Challenge winner and Equus Horse of The Year Dave The King bounced back to his best last time out and will be hard to catch if his massive stride takes him to the front at around the 800m mark. See It Again is also back to his best and should be running on strongly from a good draw.
Gladatorian beat See It Again narrowly in the G2 Drill Hall Stakes (1400m) last time and they face each other on the same terms. The race might set up well for him as there looks to be a lot of pace and he has a fine turn of foot.
Cosmic Speed beat older horses in the G1 H F Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes (1600m) at Turffontein and has the class to go close. Montien is a top-class front-runner who stays on resolutely and he will probably have no option but to seek the lead from a wide draw.
William Robertson has had a tremendous season over sprints, including winning the G1 Computaform Sprint (1000m) last time out. Oriental Charm is courageous and although preferring further he has won a Group 2 over this trip this season. Great Plains, Cafe Culture and Royal Aussie are all capable of strong finishes.
The G2 HKJC World Pool Stakes (1400m) is not an easy race to decipher.
Lucrative was on the up when winning over this trip in fluent style in January. She returns from a five-month layoff, but trainer Dean Kannemeyer gets his horses fit and she is in pole over an ideal trip. The G2 KZN Fillies Guineas (1600m) did not pan out well for Oxalis Gold but she will appreciate the step down in trip.
Bevies Delight has won the last two times she has run over this course and distance and beat Sohot Sowhat by a head last time and is now better off at weights. Sohot Sowhat is officially way out at the weights, but her last start win showed her to be potentially top-class. Green Sapphire was caught hopelessly wide in the KZN Fillies Guineas and can bounce back over this more suitable trip from a good draw.
Sovereign Grant should be running on. Minogue has class so can't be ignored from a wide draw with champion jockey Richard Fourie up. Scarlet Macaw is one of the two highest-rated runners and can't be ignored despite a wide draw. Summer Lily and Be Merry have form chances but wide draws are against them. Callmegetrix has been in fine form but looks held by Scarlet Macaw. Magical View and Sonic Jet look held.
The G3 Cup Trial (1800m) gives horses a last chance to earn a berth in the G1 Durban July (2200m) and gives others the opportunity to have a good build up run.
Pomodoro's Jet is well regarded and has proved why this season with three comfortable wins in succession from 1400m to 1600m. He can prove he stays this trip here from pole position. Pacaya is well weighted on his excellent G1 Cape Town Met (2000m) performance and has a plum draw. Madison Valley has had excuses for his last three runs and is capable of a strong finish from off the pace. Wild Intent ran a cracking second in the G1 SA Derby (2450m) and can confirm his position on the July log.
Zeitz had a cracking win over this trip in a Group 3 three-year-old event in Cape Town, but has the widest draw of all. Regulation is under sufferance, but is on the up and has a good draw. Underworld ran a cracking third in the G3 Greyville 1900 (1900m) and if it pans out as well this time, he could be in the shake up, but he has a tougher draw. Hotarubi is a frustrating sort but very capable on his day and is well drawn. Those are the ones that make most appeal.
The last race is a handicap for fillies and mares over 1000m. Tara Star is hard-knocking and is among the winning chances.
Ayuwi Yuwi is in good form too. Daphnes Daughter has some useful form in the strong centre of Cape Town and will enjoy the step back to the minimum trip. Million Voices is useful but has a wide draw here. Siesta Sunset was not disgraced in the G3 Strelitzia Stakes (1100m) and could make a bold bid here from pole position against older horses. Midnight Fusion is capable and from a good draw might bounce back to form.
Those are the ones who make most appeal.
