‘He looks sure to improve now stepping up to six furlongs’ - Sam King’s daily wagers

Sam King is back with three wagers on Thursday.

Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore stole the show once again at York yesterday and may well do so once more with The Lion In Winter this afternoon.

However, all things considered, he looks short enough in the betting at 6/4 now up in trip for his first start since August and there are better wagers to be had on the card.

The best bet on the card has to be Wise Approach (4.45), who looked an absolute picture before making a winning debut on Royal Ascot trials day.

He looks destined for the Coventry Stakes at the Royal meeting, having shown plenty of toe in behind the leaders before picking up strongly through the line at Ascot.

A 1,000,000gns son of Mehmas – who is a half-brother to the three-time Group 1 winner Perfect Power – he looks sure to improve now stepping up to six furlongs and can took his record to two wins from as many starts for Charlie Appleby.

2pt Win – Wise Approach

Odds – 11/8

The mile handicap at 2.42 looks like a competitive affair, although Old Cock could well be worth siding with now back on a sound surface.

Tailed off in the Lincoln on his seasonal reappearance, the strong-travelling Old Cock should be much more at home on quick ground at York.

Despite a winning record of three from seven, it's probably fair to say he's not the most reliable of types, but it was tough not to be impressed with the way he travelled before picking up nicely to score over a mile off 83 at Haydock last August.

He's off a 7lb higher marker here, but he left the impression that was definitely workable and it's interesting that his handler, Ed Bethell, won this twelve months ago.

1pt Win – Old Cock

Odds – 7/1

Aesterius brings solid credentials on his Breeders' Cup form to the Listed Westow Stakes (4.18), but there's a chance we haven't seen the best of Star Of Mehmas yet, who looks like decent value to come out on top.

The daughter of Mehmas shaped nicely when third in Listed company on her reappearance at Chelmsford, travelling up strongly out wide before fading in the closing stages over six furlongs.

Dropping back to the minimum trip, which she's three from three over after breaking the course record as a juvenile at Ayr last season, looks like a major positive, as does the booking of Ryan Moore, who was seen to excellent effect on the Knavesmire yesterday.

She's well-drawn in stall three and with an unexposed profile as a sprinter, can get back to winning ways under her 3lb penalty.

1pt Win – Star Of Mehmas

Odds – 9/2
