Manoel Nunes returns as Duchess hopefuls impress at morning gallops
A very large number of punters braved the winter chill to attend the first Barrier Trials of the 2025 racing season at Champ de Mars. Their strong turnout is a clear sign of the growing excitement and impatience racing fans are eager for the action to return.
From early morning, parking areas were quickly overwhelmed, with many making their way to the gradins de la montagne to follow the session, which unfolded under intermittent rain.
There was a palpable sense of anticipation almost electric as if this morning's trials were just a preview of what promises to be a thrilling season ahead.
The standout jockey of the day was Manoel Nunes, the 2019 champion, now signed by the Gujadhur stable. The Brazilian's first mount was aboard Zil Moris, who was out for a quiet trot as part of his reconditioning.
However, the spotlight was firmly on the 24 newcomers lining up in the Barrier Trials many of whom are tipped to feature in the upcoming Fashion Heights Duchess of York Cup on Saturday, 26th July.
Barrier Trial 1
Nordic Prince confirmed his recent strong form on the sand, showing a sharp turn of foot to win comfortably. Krim displayed early speed before finishing second, while Zygi quickened well for third ahead of Unsung Hero.
Barrier Trial 2
A horse that had already caught the eye in training, Cumbre Vieja produced a classy performance to win. Not In Doubt led early but was caught late and settled for second. Brave Bomber and Amancio completed the quartet.
Barrier Trial 3
Join The Dots broke smartly and held off a strong challenge from Roman's Revenge to win. Wolf Mountain, widely regarded as a serious Classic contender, ran on well for third. One And All recovered from a slow start to finish fourth.
Barrier Trial 4
This trial could have passed as a dress rehearsal for the Duchess! Itsrainingwilliam made all to win impressively ahead of William Iron Arm and Meridius. Port Louis finished strongly despite a sluggish start.
Barrier Trial 5
The Mauritian showed intent, bursting from the gates and making every yard. Good Council produced a late rally to grab second, with Tyrion Lannister and Blue Bay close behind.
Barrier Trial 6
In the final trial of the morning, Mind Map impressed with a smooth win, holding off Summer Snow. Fencing Captain and Rainwater completed the frame.
Notable Track Gallops
In addition to the Barrier Trials, several horses impressed during their morning gallops on the sand. Among those worth noting were Alpine Challenge, Canford Lights, Transonic, Juniper Lane, Orange Red, Cartel Boss, and Vartacus all building fitness ahead of the much-anticipated season opener.
