On the eve of the win that secured his place at stud, Widden has announced that Southport Tycoon will remain in Victoria for his first season in the breeding barn.

The son of Written Tycoon will be one of the headline acts at Widden's Riddells Creek base later this year, where he will stand for $38,500, including GST.

Southport Tycoon was retired after his sixth placing in the C F Orr Stakes and Widden principal Antony Thompson is excited about the dual Group 1 winner joining the roster.

"A stunning-looking son of Written Tycoon that we just had to add to our roster," he said.

"We fought hard to secure the horse, as there was plenty of competition for the Bennett Racing-owned colt.

"He looks like the obvious stallion to take the baton from his Champion sire, Written Tycoon.

"Written Tycoon is making a name for himself as a sire of sires, and Ole Kirk is his only other dual Group I-winning son at stud. He has gotten off to a very strong start with his first runners.

"Like Ole Kirk, Southport Tycoon is also free of Danehill blood, offering a wealth of opportunity for broodmare owners.

"He comes from a top-class North American female family that has worked brilliantly in Australia to produce Group I winners Artorius and Delectation, so he is the complete package in terms of race performance, pedigree, and type."

The Orr Stakes was the 15th start in Southport Tycoon career, which was highlighted by win in last year's Australian Guineas (1600m) and Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Group 1 level.

Southport Tycoon joins a Widden Victoria roster that includes established performers Nicconi and Star Witness and former star stayer Russian Camelot.
